California’s largest lake wasn’t supposed to exist, and it’s disappearing fast
California’s largest lake by surface area isn’t Tahoe or Shasta. It’s an accident that happened in 1905, and it’s currently vanishing in real time.
For about eighteen months, floodwater from the Colorado River poured through a blown-out irrigation canal into a bone-dry desert basin sitting below sea level. Engineers finally sealed the breach in 1907, by which point they’d accidentally filled a new inland sea covering roughly 343 square miles — almost twice the size of Lake Tahoe.
Stand on its shore today and the water still stretches to the horizon, ringed by date palms, dead fish shells, and abandoned resort towns left over from its heyday as a 1950s boating destination. It’s a strange, beautiful, uneasy kind of place, and there’s nowhere else in California quite like it.

Saltier than the ocean, and getting saltier every year
The Salton Sea has no outlet, so every drop that flows in only ever leaves by evaporation. Whatever salt and agricultural runoff arrives stays behind, and the lake now sits at roughly 25% saltier than the ocean, a number that climbs a little more every year.
Since a 2003 water-rights deal redirected irrigation runoff away from the Imperial Valley, the lake has lost more than 60 square miles of surface area and now shrinks by roughly 2,400 acres a year. That exposed lakebed isn’t just a scenery problem.
Wind off the dry playa can kick up dust laced with agricultural residue, and the surrounding Imperial Valley already has some of California’s highest respiratory hospitalization rates. The state’s Salton Sea Management Program has habitat and dust-suppression projects underway, with thousands more acres slated to come online through 2026 — worth checking current air quality before you plan a visit if you’re sensitive to it.

More than 400 bird species stop here
None of that keeps the birds away. The Salton Sea sits on the Pacific Flyway and has, at points, hosted the vast majority of North America’s eared grebes and American white pelicans in a single season. The Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge on the south shore is free to visit and genuinely one of the best birding stops in the state.
Bombay Beach turned its own collapse into an art scene
On the sea’s east shore, the half-emptied town of Bombay Beach has leaned all the way into its own decline. Wrecked cars are staged like a drive-in theater, a plywood opera house stands in someone’s yard, and sculptures show up in places you wouldn’t expect, all thanks to the artists behind the annual Bombay Beach Biennale.
Where else in this state can you go birdwatching next to a ghost-town art gallery on the shore of a shrinking accidental sea? This one’s worth the drive precisely because it doesn’t look like anywhere else in California.
Planning the visit
Salton Sea State Recreation Area charges $7 per car for day use, with campsites running $20–$30 a night. Reserve up to six months ahead from October through May; summer camping is first-come, first-served, and Mecca Beach Campground is currently closed for repairs, so check availability before you commit to a site.
Pair it with a stop at Joshua Tree National Park for a full desert weekend — the drive between the two runs under an hour, and the landscapes could not look more different.
